A Great Guide to Owning a Miniature German Shepherd

Just as with the Teacup Poodle, there is no such thing as a Miniature German Shepherd.  However, in saying that, some people do breed a small version of this breed, which is referred to as a Miniature German Shepherd.  To accomplish this, two small dogs are bred and then bred again until the small size is achieved.

Therefore, in this article when talking about a Miniature German Shepherd, please understand that this is simply a reference to a small version of a standard dog.  While this smaller dog would have the same appearance, temperament, and characteristics of the standard size, because of the breeding down process, some can experience unique health problems.

The actual size of the Miniature German Shepherd is usually between 20 and 30 pounds at maturity.  While temperament and personality does not really change, some can develop health problems such as allergies, thyroid issues, Pannus, and even a poor coat.  For this reason, any breeder that sells this type of dog should be highly reputable and knowledgeable of the breed down process involved.

Obviously, a number of advantages are associated with the Miniature German Shepherd.  Since this breed is quite small, it makes a great dog for people living in small homes, apartment dwellers, and individuals without a lot of yard space.  The small size makes it possible to enjoy all the qualities of a regular German Shepherd but without the need for significant room.

It is important for any dog that it is provided with a safe and loving home, and especially for this breed, proper training.  The dog would need to be housebroken, but also learn to avoid jumping, barking, or showing aggressive behaviors.  When provided a loving home and given training, the Miniature German Shepherd would make an excellent companion dog.

This breed is very devoted to its owner and they are actually great with children, as well as other animals.  However, the one benefit to the German Shepherd that many people love is that they make great watchdogs or guard dogs.  Even with the smaller size, the dog still thinks it is a 120 pound dog so this breed naturally provides protection.

The Miniature German Shepherd would also need to be fed a proper diet.  We recommend you stick with top brands for commercial food to include Iams and Science Diet.  Both of these brands offer the proper balance of nutrition and reduce output of feces, making cleanup easier.  However, you can always make homemade food if you want, finding some excellent recipes on the internet.

If you are looking for a good companion dog and have no reason or intention of breeding, which should be left to the professionals anyway, then it would be important to have your dog spayed or neutered.  That way, you would never have to worry about the animal becoming pregnant or getting out and impregnating another dog, especially one that is not a German Shepherd.  Finally, having your dog spayed or neutered can also calm the dog down, which means you end up with a mellower pet.
