Facts about the Mini Shar Pei
A dog which possesses a long ancestry and the distinction of being unique in appearance, it is hardly surprising that the already popular dog would be bred into a canine of even further interest; namely, a mini shar pei.
Miniature versions of popular dog breeds have become trendy to own. Virtually any breed can be “miniaturized” through selective breeding, and the positive reaction of the general public has encouraged the practice. The dog breed called Chinese Shar Pei is traditionally a medium sized dog, measuring about 18-22 inches at the shoulder. The process of miniaturizing a breed of this type that is naturally a specific size is an intricate one. Because canines are able to breed throughout a reproductive cycle, it is possible for one pup to be conceived one day and other to be conceived as much as 15 days later. While the offspring can be conceived at different times, all puppies are born at the same time. This means that the earliest of the conceived puppies will be more mature and developed at birth, while those which were conceived last will likely be smaller and weaker since they have not had the luxury of time to develop. It is these, the smallest of the offspring, which are targeted by designer breeders.
Breeding that produces mini shar pei dogs generally occurs between two “runt” puppies from two different litters; those that were conceived late and born early. This does not ensure that miniature dogs will be the result; however, by following the same breeding process through several generations, instances of smaller pups become more common. A market is developed through which people who are already interested in the shar pei breed are able to invest in a much smaller versions of the dog.
It is understandable how this breed has acquired such an avid following. A Chinese Shar Pei is dog that has a long line of ancestors. There is documentation dating back to the 13th century of the presence of these dogs in China, and possibly even further back to the Han Dynasty. A distinctly unique characteristic of this breed is their coat which is very short and incredibly bristly; a feature that requires much less grooming than most dogs. The lack of longer hair also means that this breed sheds very little. An even more distinguishing feature that truly sets the Shar Pei apart from other breeds is the wave of wrinkles that cover the dog’s body. The mini shar pei possesses all of these features; its only degree of difference is in the size. The miniature version of the dog is slightly smaller; considered a mini if the height is less than 17 inches. The difference is enough to disqualify the dog as an AKC standard, with the minimal height regarded as a fault in the ring.
The smaller version of the Chinese Shar Pei does not generally experience any health issues that are unique from the standard breed. Each variety may experience eye problems, bowed legs, kidney disease, skin problems and hip dysplasia. When considering the purchase of the smaller version of the breed, however, it is vital to choose a reputable breeder to ensure the quality of the dog. When improper breeding practices occur, the puppies may very well possess irreparable health issues.
A well bred Shar Pei is a loving and loyal dog; calm, quiet and devoted to its master. An extremely intelligent breed, these dogs are often seen as being regal and dignified. They can be quite playful, as well, and will benefit from regular exercise. Although their size may be less, the mini is equal in every other aspect when well bred.
